Usually, when comparing two vehicles that operate in the same category, we find similarities and advantages to each. In this case, the match is not even close, because the new Toyota Corolla Cross 2022 is not in the same league as the Nissan Qashqai 2022.
The reason is quite simple. Nissan's product was launched in 2013 in Europe before it was brought here for 2018. So it's aging. Not bad; old.
Consequently, against a brand new product that comes with everything you need, it doesn't make the grade.
Here's what it lacks, in fact.
Power
The Corolla Cross is powered by the most powerful engine in the Corolla lineup, a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder that offers 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. This engine does a perfect job of delivering enough power to offer great performance while remaining economical.
Nissan's Qashqai is also powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, but its performance is disappointing at 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. In use, you can guess, it falls short at Nissan.
Technology and safety
The Qashqai remains a relatively hip vehicle, but considering the fact that the Corolla Cross comes to market with the latest technology, it overshadows its Nissan rival.
Simply in terms of safety, the Corolla Cross comes with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite. The latter is more complete. Two specific examples. In addition to the pedestrian detection systems, Toyota has added cyclist recognition. In addition to the lane departure warning offered on both vehicles, the Toyota system makes a correction to bring you back.
That's what we mean by a 10-year gap.
Reliability
Finally, because we're talking about a Toyota model and the Corolla's mechanics, no other vehicle can compete in terms of reliability. Even the Qashqai does well because it's also proven. That's one more reason to choose the Toyota representative.
